MITO Technology is a spin-off company of the Polytechnic University of Milan, other shareholders being the University of Padua, the University of Calabria and 3M Italia and the management team. MITO was created to address a need felt at university level in Italy to have professional management of Intellectual Property (IP) and an effective licensing practice. The original idea by a number of Italian universities and professionals to found MITO as the ultimate outsourcer for licensing and IP management hinges on the assumption that the creation of critical masses of technology on the supply side is a compelling precondition for a successful technology transfer practice, as it reduces dramatically transaction costs for potential licensees, allows specialisation, favours economies of scope and enables long-lasting relationships with industry. Selection of technologies under management, and accurate due diligence by MITO ensures the high quality of the portfolio. Potential licensees rely on the ex ante evaluation by MITO as a factor that reduces adverse selection and reduces the risk associated with in-sourcing of technology.
MITO Technology understands both the industrial as well as the academic side of technology transfer, a perspective that has been leveraged in supporting frictionless technology exploitation for a number of consortia and clients. That approach is one of the reasons why MITO leads on behalf of the European Commission the capacity building effort in technology transfer in PROs and investments funds at European level in the context of the EU Framework Programmes for Research and Innovation as coordinator of the Horizon 2020 research and innovation action PROGRESS-TT.
MITO’s clients benefit from the expertise of a team of senior Italian and European technology transfer professionals with extensive experience of licensing and due diligence deals and technological, managerial and legal competences.
