Startup Udhë – On the road and on the market – the ride sharing App from Pristina!
Udhë – an EU4TECH PoC project and VentureUP startup has hit the commercial road with a local ride sharing App and now plans to expand across the region.
The idea for the App was born when team members noted the public transportation problems around more prominent cities in Kosovo*. The student group, living in the Pristina suburbs and commuting to the University of Pristina, faced daily difficulties with transportation. Taxis were too expensive while buses and trains were not so frequent. At that time, the team leader Eroll Gorqi started a Facebook group connecting people so they could informally arrange to share a ride. However, driven by word-of-mouth, the number of group members was growing, and the team recognized the quasi solution as an opportunity to develop a professional service.
The team started to develop an application for drivers and passengers at the beginning of 2020. They applied to EU4TECH PoC call to obtain technical assistance with a focus on prototyping. Untimely, internal coding development outstripped the timeline of external prototyping TA but the team admit that the webinars, technical assistance team discussions, and the introduced tools for marketing, business modelling, and funding were helpful in building the expertise of the team. Around the TA the team focused on systematic collection of data which offered a much firmer basis to build the confidence of the team in their business model and launch the App.
The application has been on the market through Google Play and the Apple store since January 2021. The community and social media has 20.000 followers and close to 7000 users. Daily they solve commuting problems for several hundred passengers. The 4 person team is now looking for more significant turnover and towards EU4TECH to help them secure a seed angel investment for expansion. They are planning to launch the service in Albania and on Balkan markets where the biggest EU commuting platform previously failed. The company started its activities in VentureUP, the regional university incubator, and recently graduated to offices in the Innovation center Kosovo*.
